At Brownsville Think Tank Matters Inc., we offer a comprehensive opportunity for community members looking to obtain their New York State Security Guard License. Whether you're seeking a second job, a career change, or aiming to enter the workforce, we sponsor training programs to help you get licensed and start your career in the security field. Requirements: In New York State, to become a licensed security guard, you must complete a series of training courses and meet certain requirements. The two key components of training for new security guard applicants are:

 

8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course:

• This course is mandatory for all first-time security guard applicants. It covers essential topics such as the role of a security guard, the legal and ethical responsibilities, communication skills, and basic security procedures. 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course: After completing the 8-hour course and obtaining your license, you are required to complete an additional

 

• 16-hour on-the-job training course within 90 days of starting employment as a security guard. This training provides more hands-on learning, covering areas like emergency response, report writing, and situational awareness.

 

Security Guard License Renewals:

New York State security guard licenses are valid for two years. To maintain an active license, you must complete a security guard renewal process that includes the following:

 

• 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training: Every year, security guards are required to complete an 8-hour in-service training course, which ensures that you are up to date on laws, regulations, and best practices. This training is essential for keeping your skills sharp and your license in good standing. Renewal Application: Security guards must submit a renewal application to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) before the expiration of their license. The renewal process includes a fee and proof of completion of the 8-hour annual in-service training
